SURVIVALIST LIST
I am a former member of the Special Forces 5th Group. I was assigned to macVsog '69-'71 (Military Assistance Command Studies and Observation Group Vietnam).
Since leaving the military, I have served in law enforcement. Some of my duties included teaching SWAT classes and I also trained law enforcement Snipers. I have composed this list, from my knowledge of many years experience and insight into the human nature. However, in my humble opinion, these are my suggestions only and are by no means the only solutions that you should follow. I only wish to help people get on the right track should anything arise and personal survival is required. I highly suggest you seek further and more in depth formal survival training.
This is a survivalist list to help keep you and yours alive. Depending on where you live it may need to be modified or added to. This is a Basic Survival Guide. If you have small children, you will need to compensate for this (children’s meds, baby food, bottles, etc.) Everyone's expertise will be needed and appreciated. If anything is repeated, there is a reason. Some things can not be overstated!
Make sure you have an escape plan in case things get real bad. Do not get trapped in traffic like the people do leaving a hurricane site. You are not going to be the only person fleeing. Get maps and learn all the back roads and know where you are headed to. Have alternate routes. Do this now so you will know of all tolls, bridges, any other trouble you might run into. Stay off the main highways and interstates! Again, have alternate routes, know the terrain, study all and every aspect of where you are going. If you have car trouble, you will know where the nearest shelter is, etc. Take notes as you go. Know them by heart! Too much information never hurt anyone!
Get with family or friends that live in the country, as remote as possible, and go there. (Have this pre-arranged other folks are going to do the same thing) There is safety in numbers. This can not be stressed enough! If you live in a large metro city, consider moving. Remember, everybody is going to be leaving, you must accommodate for this. The local camping spot will be filled quickly, plus, you need to be about 150-200 miles from all metro cities, if possible. Have your escape plan down to a science so that for any foreseeable problem you may have, you will know immediately what to do.
Try to have a handgun and rifle for each person in your household. If this is not possible, at least try to have one pistol and as many rifles and shotguns as you can get your hands on. Have plenty of ammunition for each weapon you possess. A gun without ammo is useless. You might as well invest in baseballs and throw them at your presumptive supper or an intruder. This list of weapons is for your basic survival. No need in arguing over what is a better shotgun.
List of Weapons
Remington 870 Pump Action (try to have at least two) 9MM extra magazines
Remington 700 308 (long range)
.22
.22 or anything you can get just as long as you can get shells for it
AK-47
AR-15
Mini 14
If it is not possible to acquire these, at least have a shotgun, 30-30, and a .22 and a handgun. NATO rounds will be plentiful (223,308 and 9mm try to get something you can find plenty to reload with.) You should have 1-2 thousand rounds for each weapon you have. YOU CAN NOT HAVE TOO MUCH AMMO!! It will be scarce and you will need all your bullets to count. They will also be good barter tools. You can't rely on money.
*RULE OF THUMB* You should have one round for every person within a 10 mile radius of where you live. If you live in a big city, consider moving.
Tip: 00 Buckshot (9 pellets) equals about a half of an AR-15 magazine (20 rounds) for close quarters. (Can't be beat!)
Compound Bow HAVE PLENTY OF BOLTS (ARROWS)
Cross Bow 150 lb. or more pull GET GOOD TIPS (UNDERTAKER WORKS REAL WELL)
In my opinion, the Cross Bow is one of the most important weapons you can possess. With this one weapon, you can get anything you should need. First, it is an ideal hunting weapon for short range shots. Just load, aim and shoot. It's that simple. Your target is going to be close. You're talking about a target a few yards away. Don't be intimidated if you've never used one. They're easy to master. A monkey can do it! Also, you can reuse the bolt. Fire a gun and your bullet is spent. Unless you can reload (which is another story all together) and have the right tools, you are one bullet short. Make every shot count. Secondly, it can be quiet and stealthy. The cross Bow can be shot multiple times without giving away your location. Sometimes, complete silence and stealth will be your only camouflage. Be sure to have plenty of bolts(arrows). These are relatively inexpensive and can be re-used!
GUN CLEANING KIT-Do not forget about this. You don't need your gun to misfire because it is dirty.

**On the activated charcoal and batting... put a layer of activated charcoal between cotton batting and you make a breathing apparatus (home made gas mask) along with your goggles to cover your eyes. In your water barrel, put a layer of the activated charcoal between the poly batting to flush impurities from your water bucket.
Do not use cotton batting for your water, it will mildew! Only use the POLY batting in the water. NEVER USE COOKING CHARCOAL FOR EITHER OF THESE USES!
Know how to trap and store rainwater properly! It is very simple. But, you must have clean drinking water to survive. You need to keep large amounts on hand. There may be a draught! What if you have a water purification bottle and it gets broken or stolen? Or your pills get spilled and ruined?
Both of those are great to have, but, as with everything else, HAVE A BACKUP RESERVE PLAN! Always know 2,3,or 4 ways to resolve a problem should one arise.
Learn alternative uses for all these products. Vinegar and Borax have a million uses between them. There are other things I could have put down but I am trying to keep this list as short as possible. So, look into your alternative uses. You'll be surprised at what you find and may start using them now!
Learn your local fauna. Know what is edible, used for home remedies and what is poisonous. This my be the only thing you have to eat. You won't have a Dr. to go to if things get bad. And, just because an animal can eat it DOES NOT mean a human can!!!! This is imperative. Know your surroundings for you and your family’s sake. Get a book on home remedies. People lived on this earth a long time without this "new medicine" and fancy Dr.'s offices. Use what the good Lord provided you. He will not let you be without your needs. A good example is the lowly dandelion. People do their best to rid their yards of this little dastardly weed. But God knew what he was doing when He gave us the plant. The leaves can be eaten in a salad or the leaves can be steeped in hot water to flush your kidneys and the root can be made into chicory (coffee). So many uses from God's little yellow flower, and man does his best to rid his miserable life of it (sounds kind of like what this country is doing now, doesn't it?) But please, learn your fauna. You don't want to wipe with the wrong plant, if you know what I mean.
If possible, have some games and cards on hand. You will need something for entertainment. Don't have anything that requires batteries though. They will be too valuable to waste.
Get as many solar rechargeable things as you can. Get your things in order. I know this list seems long, but most of the things you already have.
Make a GIT-GONE BAG. Keep it close to the door in case you have to Git-Gone in a hurry and have no time to pack anything. This is a must. Go to the doctor and the dentist. Get what you need done now, while things are pretty steady. No need in having a wailing toothache in the woods with no way to fix it.
I'm sure you are wondering by now on how to haul your stash? If you have an SUV, you're fine. If not, you should get an enclosed trailer, like the ones at the U-Haul store. If you get a vehicle, choose one you can haul your goods in and preferably with 4WD. You never know when you have to go across a muddy field, stream or ditch.
Know how to shoot. Each bullet must count. Teach your family about weapons and how to properly shoot them. Teach your kids. A child is NEVER too young to learn about guns and proper gun safety. Take a hunter education course. Make it a family affair. Knowledge is your best weapon. That is what keeps you alive. If your wife is scared of guns, find another woman that ain't and acquaint them. Guns don't kill people any more than cars do, it's just the drivers you need to be afraid of. A weapon can be your best friend in the worst of times if used correctly and responsibly. If you have a gun range where you live, join it, learn all you can. Now, there are some like minded people you really need to know! Safety in numbers, like minded people. Good deal. If you have no range, find some of your hunter friends and start your own club. Nothing formal-all you need is a place to go and they will come. Cowboy Shootin' groups are all over the country. Another good place to go and learn. Shooting something to eat may mean life or starvation for your family. This is a harsh reality, but a reality none the less. This is not an extended camping trip list. It is a Survivalist List. There's not an, "I really don't want to do this!" you may have no other choice.
The more you know the less likely you are to perish. What if it is dead winter and there is nothing to forage? What will you do? Wait for someone else to do it for you? No. You have no one to depend on but God and yourself.
Any of your friends or relatives that know you are preparing will not prepare themselves (have you been called foolish yet?) However, they will come running to you when everything goes down hill. Know who you will help and who you won't. Sounds rough, but ohhhh, so true! You will need to keep this in mind when you are gathering stuff up.
The old fable of the Ant and the Grasshopper come to mind. You've been preaching, but they ain't listening. Most people don't want to be bothered to change their glorious "mall shopping" lives! Reality is not what most people want to know about. Just know this, there will always be more people than you plan for.
You also have to keep in mind the strangers and stragglers that will be looking for handouts. This generation is full of entitlement brats. They will be none to happy when you send them away empty handed. Too bad! If people will kill you now for the shoes on your feet, think what they'll do if they are really hungry! This is why you must try to go far, far away into the boonies and be entirely self sufficient. You and yours is what is important, you will not be able to help everyone. This is a very tough, unfortunate reality. I pity the city people.
The government won't be there to help you. Food drops will be peppered with those little RFID tracking tags to find where you are. Sound slightly paranoid? (Ever watch RED DAWN?) With our government, foreign governments, terrorists & radicals. Yeah. You should have a touch of paranoia, too. It keeps you on the ball and alert, aware of your surroundings. You will have to rely entirely on yourself. Always think of the worst case scenario and prepare for that, first. Pray we never see it though! This guide is for all types of disasters, natural or manmade. Learn to be self reliant.
Now that I have filled you with a sense of gloom & doom....go, prepare, check your spare tire, get your oil changed and fill the tank. Watch as many videos as you can on how to be self sufficient. Know how to build a fire in the woods without matches! Simple things you learn can make all the difference in the world (and keep you alive!). While you are out scouting your route and destination, go camping! Really rough it! You will know exactly what you'll need and what to expect! Fear is your worst enemy and knowledge is your best friend. Because, when you know what to expect, all your fears will subside. There is no plausible excuse to be unprepared for any situation. Take control of the situation, don't let the situation control you. If you wish to contact me, feel free to do so.
"Knowing is half the battle"
No truer words have ever been spoken.
